Thanksgiving Weekend: The Wolverines, Blue Devils, and NFL

Updated: Dec 14, 2021

Michigan Wolverines

To begin, I had to eat some crow this weekend when the Wolverines beat the Buckeyes. I thought it was going to be a Buckeye blowout. The Wolverines, for the first time in the Harbaugh era, kicked ass. I had previously said that Harbaugh would never get it done and that Michigan was no longer a premier program. I'm not wrong yet.

The Wolverines need to beat the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday and get into the college football playoff to officially turn to relevancy. I'm really excited to watch that game and see if the Wolverines can reestablish themselves as a top program in the country. If they continue to dominate the line of scrimmage the way they did with Hassan Haskins and the O-line controlling the ball and Aiden Hutchinson and David Ojabo putting pressure on the quarterback, they will punch their ticket to their first college football playoff.

Duke Versus Gonzaga

This is what basketball should look like. Tough defense and well-designed offense. These two teams played the most entertaining game of basketball I'd seen in two years. It is amazing how much pleasure I can take in watching players throw two-handed passes. Also, it is amazing how much a simple thing can improve the quality of play. I don't understand why the Duke players are dehydrated so much, but if not for that, they would have run away with this victory. Still, it was the second-best game of the weekend.

College Football Miscellaneous

Auburn had Alabama. Stay in bounds! Oklahoma versus Oklahoma State was fantastic and way better than advertised. Then, Michigan State versus Penn State in the snow was a lot of fun, too. Good stuff this weekend.

I'm hoping for Georgia, Michigan, Cincinnati, and Oklahoma State in the playoffs. We'll see how championship weekend goes.

NFL

I was hoping the Rams and the Bills would meet in the Super Bowl. It is still possible, but I'm doubting it now. The best four teams in the NFL are the Buccaneers, Packers, Chiefs, and Patriots.

The early struggles of the Chiefs are seemingly behind them. They still have Mahomes. That's enough. At this point, there the AFC favorite for the Super Bowl.

The Patriots are back. Belichick is the best coach in the history of pro sports. He found a new game manager that several teams will soon regret passing on...again. Sorry, but Mac Jones is better than the quarterbacks taken ahead of him. It may be too soon to tell, but early signs indicate he'll have the most success. Some of these other quarterbacks could still develop, but history tells us if the Jets or Bears drafted you to play quarterback, you'll probably end up being awful and a hall of fame quarterback went later in the draft.

The Buccaneers are the defending champs and have Tom Brady and possibly a better team than last year. All Brady needs is a ticket to the dance, and he could get them there. I'd say they are the favorite for the NFC's representation in the Super Bowl. Brady gets it done. He'll probably get it done after Mahomes has been inducted into the hall of fame. Don't hate because he's great.

The Packers have Aaron Rodgers. Vaccinated, unvaccinated, on time, tardy, contract, no contract, this dude plays great football. If Brady is obsessed with winning and being the greatest of all time, Rodgers is obsessed with annoying the living hell out of every person without cheese on their head. (He may even enjoy annoying them.) Rodgers may win a second Super Bowl just because it would agitate people. He doesn't care about winning all that much, but he sure would love to win if it meant angering the football media, which for the first time in his career, it might.
