Everyone knows the Detroit Tigers have been disappointing this season. Now, as we approach the end of the season, what have we learned?
It's time to invest in the youth
Riley Green, Kerry Carpenter, Ryan Kreidler, Spencer Torkelson, and Matt Manning's development should be the focus. I want to win, but investing in developing these players and the farm system will pay more dividends than continuing to overpay free agents. I'm excited about what these guys could be 3-4 years from now. I know that timeline is longer than most would like, but I want to see something that will last.
I want the Tigers to become more like the Braves or Dodgers than the last few good Tigers teams. While the Dombrowski teams were great, they weren't perennial contenders. They jumped to the top, fell off, jumped up, and fell off. I think the Tigers could easily make another jump like that, but it wouldn't be built to last.
Quick Thoughts
The pitching has been great.
The hitting can't be this bad again.
Javier Baez will be back. Don't lie to yourself.
The Tigers are behind the other Detroit teams but not by as much as you think.
The injuries played a significant role in this team's struggles.
Tigers that missed significant time
Casey Mize
Tarik Skubal
Matt Manning
Eduardo Rodriguez
Michael Pineda
Austin Meadows
The list isn't exhaustive, but you get the point. Success is difficult when four of your five opening-day starting rotation pitchers miss vast chunks of the season. I've got high hopes for new general manager Scott Harris. I think things will turn around.
